8:00 am
good morning, america. this morning, breaking overnight. a guilty verdict in the shocking case that rocked the college football world. jerry sandusky, the former penn state football coach is all but certain to spend the rest of his life in prison. we have the emotional moments from the courthouse. and what does this mean for his victims? storm watch. look at this. a massive storm system brewing in the gulf. and that heads straight for florida this weekend. this, as wild weather wreaks havoc overnight, and grounds hundreds of flights across the country. bear-knuckle brawl. imagine if you open your back door to see this, two giant bears tearing into each other. we talked to the stunned resident. it's the amazing video you have to see to believe. and no soup for you. the man behind the soup nazi,
8:01 am
now, the focus of a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. his recipes caught in the middle. can he handle the heat? >> no soup for you. and good morning, everyone. dan is on a well-deserved vacation this weekend. so, we want to give a big, warm, "gma" welcome, to our newest contributor here at abc, our newest family member, bill mulroney. >> thank you very much. >> ben comes to us from canada. he's the best-known television anchor in canada, i think. i've been following your career for a long time. he coasts "etalk." that's the number one entertainment program there. he's also been a host of "canadian idol." and here in the states, he has hosted "live" with kelly. i watched you both times. and you were hilarious. >> thank you. >> i'm very excited that you're here. welcome to the "gma" family. >> thank you. ron and ginger keep singing in front of me. and i keep telling them, i was a host, not a judge. >> don't judge us. >> i would never do that.
8:02 am
>> none of us can sing. let me say, good morning, america. we have a lot to get to this morning, including the case of the millionaire gone missing. the boat he took out late the other night, washed ashore without him. but just as they call off the search, his mother says this. not only may he be alive. but she should be entrusted with his fortune until he's found. what is going on here? >> a bizarre story in florida. and a strange tale of an upscale suburban parent, going too far for protecting their child. take a look at this mug shot. two parents from wealthy orange county, california, both of them lawyers. accused of planting drugs on a school volunteer who disciplined their child. we have much more on how they got busted, coming up. let's get right to the breaking news overnight. the verdict in the jerry sandusky case. look at this. sandusky led away in shackles after the verdict was read late last night. and abc's jim avila was there for it all.
8:03 am
good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. there were 9 days of testimony and 20 hours of deliberation, leading to 45 guilty counts. but those numbers fail to capture the real emotions here in the penn state community. emotions that burst like an overstretched balloon on these courthouse steps. outside the courtroom, a crowd gathered, hungry for justice. nearly a year's worth of hostility, spilling on to the courthouse steps. >> he's going to be going to hell forever. >> i hope every day, he rots in that prison. >> reporter: jerry sandusky, his hands cuffed. the first night of the rest of his life behind bars. the jury convicting him of 45 counts of abusing little boys. a penn state icon, now just another pedophile heading to prison. >> there's no doubt that these jurors believe that jerry sandusky's a monster. that's what they said in this verdict. >> reporter: inside court, sandusky stood for the verdict. hands in his pocket, his shoulders slumping deeper
8:04 am
with each guilty. >> jerry was saddened. he teared up a little bit. >> reporter: dottie sandusky, his wife of nearly 50 years, did not shed a tear. coldly staring at the jury and shaking her head side-to-side as the guilties mounted. and there's no question what a jury of his peers thought of her husband. >> obviously, the jury of this case did not agree with the assessment of mr. amendola. >> reporter: the defense claimed its usual appeal and claimed it had been rushed to trial. sandusky's attorneys detailing for the first time its reasoning for keeping jerry off the witness stand. they knew his son, matt, was ready to be called as a rebuttal witness. and feared the jury reaction. >> we were attempting to climb mt. everest from the bottom of the mount. obviously, we didn't make it. >> reporter: the prosecution, during the trial in their closing arguments, called jerry sandusky a serial predator. the jury had much better shorthand for that. they labeled him a monster, with 45 guilty counts.
8:05 am
ben? >> jim avila, thank you. joining us now is mike boni, the attorney for the first victim who came forward. the story opened the floodgates in this story. welcome, mr. boni. >> good morning. >> we know that your client was not in the courthouse. but what was his reaction to the verdict? >> i spoke with my client as he was driving to work last night. and he could barely contain himself. he was -- he was elated. words really couldn't describe the feeling that he had knowing that he was so very instrumental in seeing justice served last night. he was very gratified in the jury's decision. it confirmed to him how well his testimony went in. and the testimony of the other victims, as well. and he couldn't be more pleased. >> well, you said it. instrumental, indeed.
8:06 am
not only was his testimony vital, but he opened the floodgates so so many other young men would come forward and testify against jerry sandusky. what are they feeling at this point? all the other victims, knowing that jerry sandusky's going to jail? >> i'm sure, to a person, that they are feeling that justice is served. this has been a long, extremely emotional ordeal for these young men. this is something that's going to stay with them for the rest of their lives. but for a brief respite in time, they feel a sense of relief that i bet to say none of us has ever experienced in our lives. the feeling that this monster will now spend the rest of his life in jail, is a tremendous feeling for all of the victims. >> let's look to the future now. what is the next step from here? are you thinking about pursuing a civil case? or is seeing sandusky in jail for the rest of his life enough for your client?
8:07 am
>> listen. it's more than enough. that's not saying we're going to meet. we will. we're going to meet after the dust settles. we're going to caucus and decide what is in the family's best interest. we're not ruling out a civil trial by any stretch of the imagination. but that's nothing we decided as a fate accompli at this point. we need to sit down, meet -- the first thing we have to do is manage the press, as was the case last fall, descended upon their little village in full force. and this is something they want to avoid now. they want to go back and lead a semblance of their normal lives. so, the first thing we're going to do is try to get them the privacy that they so richly deserve. >> michael boni, thank you so much for joining us this morning. >> my pleasure. thank you. >> bianna? >> hopefully, this will bring
8:08 am
some closure for the victims and their families. ben, thank you. we're going to turn to the storm watch, a giant cluster of storms brewing in the gulf will most likely turn into our next named storm, debbie. and it could wreak havoc across multiple states. our meteorologist, ginger zee, is here with the latest on that. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, everyone. i want you to focus on the title here. it's a tropical concern. it's not a yet depression. it's not yet a storm. it's messy and lopsided. we can't call it anything other than a lot of thunderstorms. it has the fuel to become a tropical storm in the next 24 hours. 82 in most of the water that is the gulf of mexico. about one or two degrees above what is normal. if this thing gets going, it has plenty of warm water to feed on. where will it go? most of the models on the spaghetti plot take it over into florida. a few into brownsville. no matter what it gets named, no matter what type of storm it becomes, it's going to bring a lot of rain, even for places
8:09 am
like miami. i'll have more on this and a look at the national weather coming up. but for now, back to ben and bianna. >> love your spaghetti plot, ginger. thank you. let's get to ron claiborne with other stories developing right now. >> good morning, everyone. violent thunderstorms in the northeast and a fire at a faa ground control center in new jersey snarled air traffic all across the country. hundreds of flights were canceled because of the bad weather and the fire that knocked out an electronic system that controls flights in and out of airports. more delays are expected today, as airlines tries to move out all of the stranded passengers. and lightning strikes and strong winds are causing wildfires to spread in seven states this morning. already more than 69,000 acres have been scorched in colorado alone. many homeowners who had just returned to their houses had to evacuate all over again. meanwhile, in utah, thousands of homes were threatened by wildfires. there's also blazes in california, arizona, nevada and wyoming. and for the first time, an official of the catholic church has been convicted for covering up sexual abuse by priests. it happened in philadelphia
8:10 am
yesterday. prosecutors say he failed to tell parishioners the priest he assigned to their parish was accused of molesting children. he faces up to ten years in prison. and cops in illinois will hand out st rarely in a parking. the 74-year-old driver of a bmw got one after this expensive smashup. and the officials say it appears the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake. fortunately, no one was injured. and finally, check this out. meet the world's ugliest dog. a british pooch named mugly, of all things. we have 28 others. look at that thing. a contest held in northern california. its short snout, its beady eyes and white whiskers earned the 8-year-old chinese
8:11 am
crested the title. mugly won 1,000 bucks and dog cookies. i don't know what a dog can do with $1,000. >> maybe the owners could buy some citiz some scissors and trim him. >> i'm not sure it's a dog. >> that's cold, man. >> cold. let me ask you a question -- how are gas prices up in canada? >> they are high. they're very high. >> we have good news to tell folks at home right now, prices at the pump are going down. instead of $5 gas, we're looking at gas costing less than $3 across the u.s. and more states are expecting to drop below that magic number this weekend. how low will they go? alex perez is on the story in chicago. good morning, alex. finally, good news. >> reporter: hey, good morning. yes, some good news. the drop is dramatic. analysts believe the national average for a gallon of gas could dip below 3 bucks by fall. gas is an astonishing 49 cents
8:12 am
cheaper right now than it was just two months ago. in michigan, down 52 cents. in albany, new york, down 55 cents. and in alabama, down a whopping 72 cents. there's 16 states selling gas under $3 a gallon. and in the days to come, six more states could join them. it was supposed to be the summer of $5 gas. so, what happened? experts say there's three reasons prices are plummeting. demand is down. oil production is up. also, the recession in europe is slowing demand that markets like china, lowering crude oil prices. what's the impact on the economy? >> low gas prices light a fire under americans. they really like low prices. >> reporter: for cash-strapped consumers, trying to make ends meet is the best news they've heard in a long time. why are you so happy? >> because gas prices are ridiculous. i pay almost $60 to fill up my tank. that's like every week. it's like another bill. >> reporter: and the price slash
8:13 am
comes at an important time. american families drive more during the summer than any other time of the year. the price drop also means more money in your pocket. if you fill up the tank once a week, that's a savings of about 30 bucks a month. and even though the outlook is positive, experts say there's a few things we need to keep our eyes on, like the looming hurricane season, which could affect the price of gas. ben, so, things are looking good for now. now, to the bus bullying video that has shocked the country. a grandmother harassed endlessly by teenagers on a bus. new, a new twist. after the video went viral, those bullies are being harassed themselves. it's gone too far. abc's john schriffen is here with the latest. and, john, there's even been a hostage hoax? >> reporter: it's a scary situation for these boys. the small suburb of rochester, new york, is now on-edge, with most of the police department devoting its resources to protecting the young boys. so far, none of them have been harmed.
8:14 am
but these threats are being taken very seriously. it was the video that shocked people all around the world. schoolboys bullying bus monitor, karen klein. >> karen, you're fat. >> reporter: now, that the video has gone viral, it's the bullies who are being bullied. in fact, fearing for their lives.xt police are concerned that one of the boys received more than 1,000 threatening text messages is just 1 night. harassment has gone so far, someone called in saying they took one of the families hostage. >> we needed to respond to that almost as a barricaded gunman. we had to set up perimeters and get the house surrounded. and we had to make contact with the people inside their house. and they're fine. >> it's really gotten out of control. i never thought it would get to this point. my family's received death threats because of this. >> reporter: one of the boys' fathers claims he's been sent death threats. and the family is afraid to leave the home. >> he's a 13-year-old kid. it was a stupid mistake. and he's paying for it. >> reporter: klein, on the other hand, is receiving an outpouring of support.
8:15 am
this website set up to give the grandmother of eight a vacation, has smashed its $5,000 goal. in just a few days, it's raised almost $600,000. with that amount of money, grandma klein could buy the bus she works on. in fact, she could buy eight of them. she could go around the world, not once. but 158 times. and consider her job paid her $15,500 a year, she can now live for the next 40 years without ever going back to the bus stop. at this point, klein says she's not sure what she's going to do with all the money. unlike many lottery winners, she says she has no plans to retire. and something interesting. overnight, there was a rally in the town to fight bullying. she was one of the key speakers. clearly, she is embracing her new-found celebrity. >> what a turnaround. i have a feeling she won't buy eight school buss.
8:16 am
just have a hunch. >> and when she gets the money, she might actually retire. we'll see what happens. >> a good end to that story. john, thank you. now, to the controversy surrounding the wealthy parents from the o.c. look at their mug shots. both of them are lawyers. she's even an author. now, the couple is accused of trying to frame a volunteer at their child's school by planting drugs on her. why would they do this? here's abc's cecilia vega. >> reporter: it may look like a quiet, california suburb. but today, in the land of the real housewives, allegations of a twisted revenge plot gone terribly wrong. >> i've never come across anything like this. >> reporter: a mother and father, so picture-perfect, their wedding picture was featured on theknot.com. they're accused of framing a volunteer at their son's school, charged with planting drugs in her car, hoping she would get arrested. >> they must have thought that we wouldn't have figured it out. >> reporter: it all started two years ago. investigators say kent and jill easter thought classroom volunteer, kelli peters,
8:17 am
intentionally locked their then-6-year-old son out of school. leaving him alone and crying. the parents said peters told their son he couldn't keep up with the other kids. that he was too slow. then, curiously, jill easter filed for a restraining order. saying peters threatened to kill her. a judge denied it. the easters were angry, police say. and wanted to get peters back. so, they allegedly hatched a scheme to have peters arrested with illegal substances. >> there were drugs in my car that someone had put in my car. massive amounts of drugs. >> reporter: court records say kent easter called police using a fake name. he claimed to see peters driving erratically and placed a bag of drugs in her p.t. cruiser. when police found the drugs inside, peters was shocked. police questioned her. they searched her home. and when investigators realized the drugs weren't hers, they tracked down the easters and arrested them, charging them with multiple felonies. >> it's been a living hell. it really has. >> reporter: we tried to reach the easters. they're not talking.
8:18 am
why would someone go this far? >> i can't explain why somebody would have an irrational response to such a minor issue. >> reporter: the easters both have law degrees, which may come in handy if they face up to three years in prison. and another twist for this drama, fit for a crime novel, jill easter is also a crime writer. but for kelli peters, this is no fiction. it's a real-life nightmare. >> it's horrible. i hope they get the same thing they wanted for me. >> reporter: for "good morning america," cecilia vega, abc news, los angeles. >> what kind of example are they setting for their son? >> i know. between the bullying kids before and the parents, you're getting it from both ends. >> note to you and jessica. never do that to your twin boys. >> i'll write that down. >> adorable twin boys. meantime, it's time to check back with ginger zee on weather. >> i don't know about this. i don't know about ben. you're not used to this heat. >> no. >> it's been sweaty, oh, my goodness. it's coming to an end. a lot less humid at least.
8:19 am
look at the temperatures the next couple days in the northeast. down to the 80s we go. 10 to 20 degrees cooler. you will feel relief on this saturday. not so much if you're back to the west. denver had a record of 102 degrees. today, they could do it again at 103. it's not just the heat that's drying out the fuel on the ground. but the fire weather, not so great. 40-mile-per-hour gusts. that's not going to help the firefighters out as the fires >> as ron mentioned, we had the

8:21 am
>> reporter: the tv portrayal of his unsavory behavior made him infamous. >> no soup for you. >> reporter: and now, a legal dispute is threatening to put the retail chain, created by the al yulgahne, the real-life soup nazi, on simmer. >> no more soup for you. >> reporter: it's not a fictitious character, threatening to stir up the pot now. creditors of the bankrupt company called soup kitchen international, or s.k.i., were put on the back burner after the mismanagement of the company. s.k.i. owned the original soupman name first. they were bilked out of the name. but the recipes. >> he was the exciting guy. he was the guy with all the recipes. and he cashed out a long time ago. now, you have companies fighting over what is left. >> reporter: in a nutshell, the heated legal battle isn't over soup. but dough.
